Ans: PLAB (Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board)  is necessary for all foreign nationals who have completed their graduation (MBBS) from .

PLAB is mandatory for all  overseas doctors (or international medical graduates), from outside the European Economic Area and Switzerland, usually need to pass before they can legally practice medicine in the UK.

The exam conducting body is General Medical Council of the United Kingdom. This entrance exam is conducted to check the right knowledge and skills to practice medicine in the UK. There are two parts to the PLAB test.

The MRCP UK exam plays an essential role in the overall educational experience and continuing professional development of physicians in the UK. It is a pre-requisite for physicians willing to do training in a medically-related specialty in the UK.

What does the MRCP exam involve?

The exam consists of three parts:

Part 1 consists of two three-hour multiple-choice question papers covering knowledge and understanding of the clinical sciences.
2nd consists of three three-hour multiple-choice question papers covering diagnosis, investigation, management and prognosis of patients.
Part 2 Clinical Examination (PACES) involves a series of five clinical stations, each assessed by two independent examiners.

In the UK the exam is usually taken during the two-year period of general professional training (GPT) in medicine after you have registered with the UK General Medical Council.

The exam conducting body conducts the exam four times a year in the UK and in a number of overseas locations. To see the locations and whether places are available applicant have  to register for a GMC Online account and look under the ‘My Tests’ section. Future exam dates and both UK and overseas closing dates, are listed below.

All exam places are limited and in high demand. The exam conducting body carefully monitor demand to ensure that availability is evenly and fairly spread throughout the year.

Please note that The exam conducting body are unable to add extra test locations during 2020 in addition to those that are available to book via GMC Online.

When an applicant can take the exam outside the UK?

The exam conducting body run the exam four times a year in the UK and in a number of overseas locations. The overseas exams are hosted for us by the British Council and are listed below along with the contact details. Once you have booked online, please only contact the relevant British Council office if you have not received details of the venue two weeks before the exam.

When can you apply for an additional attempt?

To be eligible for an additional attempt for either PLAB 1 or 2 (after your fourth attempt), there must be at least one year gap between your last attempt and  additional attempt.

You should undertake further learning to improve your medical knowledge and clinical skills. You must have completed either one year’ clinical practice or a post graduate qualification.

What is expected from applicant’s clinical practice?

  • A minimum of one year’ full time clinical practice (or equivalent part time basis), with direct patient care.
  • Supported by structured reports from senior doctors responsible for your work, to show satisfactory completion.
  • Completed in the two years before requesting an additional attempt to demonstrate that you are keeping your knowledge and skill up to date.
  • Undertaken in an institution that meets the standards for regulation within its jurisdiction, and we must be able to verify this.
  • Honorary posts and those involving observation, such as clinical attachments, shadowing, observer ships and clerkship are not acceptable.

How International doctors are assessed ?

The exam conducting body aim is to make sure international medical graduates have the necessary knowledge and skills to be granted full registration and a license to practice medicine in the UK. The majority of international medical graduates demonstrate they can meet our requirements by taking the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) test.

International doctors must also show us they have the necessary knowledge of English before The exam conducting body allow them to take the PLAB test. Most do this by obtaining our minimum scores requirements in the IELTS test or the OET (medicine version).

The PLAB test is designed to assess what The exam conducting body expect a doctor entering the second year of their Foundation Programme training would know and be able to do. This includes the professional values and behaviors required of doctors, which are fundamental to delivering excellent care for patients.

The PLAB test has two parts and Applicants must pass both parts of the test within a maximum of four attempts at each.

Part 1 is a written knowledge test which is held at various locations around the world.

Part 2 is a practical test – an Objective Structure Clinical Examination (OSCE) of clinical skills. The OSCE is held at our clinical assessment center.

Passing the PLAB test means a doctor can apply for full registration with a license to practice.

Is it possible to appeal the result?

An appeal is a request for a review of a decision, made by exam body about your performance in an exam. If you have attempted any part of the exam you have a right of appeal against the result if:

  • there is clear evidence of irregularity in the conduct of the exam (including administrative error), which has adversely affected your performance
  • there were exceptional circumstances, (for which clear documentary evidence must be provided), which adversely affected your performance. You are advised to submit details of any such circumstances as soon as possible after the examination (usually within three working days) and not wait until after you receive your results.

Exam body will not accept an appeal for other reasons, such as:

  • applicant consider that his/her efforts were under-marked
  • candidate did not understand or was unaware of the exam procedures
  • applicant seek to question the exercise of professional or academic judgement.

If any applicant  want to appeal the result of the exam, he/she must have clear evidence of procedural irregularity which has adversely affected his/her performance.
