Lady Hardinge Medical College New Delhi
The Lady Hardinge Medical College for women was established in year 1914. This medical colleges was started in the memory of Queen Mary’s visit in year 1911-12.
She was wife of then Viceroy who have taken initiative for starting a medical college for women.
There was no special medical hospital for women at that time.
The construction of building was started on 17th March, 1914 by Lady Hardinge .But she died after couple of months and later on the college and the hospital was named after her .
The college and hospital was formally opened on 17th February 1916.
The founder Principal of the college was Dr. Kate Platt . Initially Course duration was 7 years including 2 years of pre-medical intermediate science course.
MBBS
In year 1935, the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery course in the college was reduced from 7 years to 5 years.
In 1960 rotating internship was introduced for 6 months.
The MBBS course was reduced from 5 years to 4 1/2 years in 1969 compulsory internship of one year was introduced.
In initial years numbers of admissions were were less and was increased slowly from 16 per year in 1916 to 60 in 1956.
In 1961 the total strength was 100 and further increased to 130 in year 1970. similarly strength of MBBS admission was increased from 130 to 150 in 2008 .
Currently number of seats in UG course (MBBS)are 200 .
PG Course
In addition to MBBS college also offers Post-graduate courses were started in year 1954.Initially it was affiliated to Punjab university but currently affiliated to University of Delhi.
Initially PG course was started only for female candidates but later on from 1970 both males and female students are eligible for various postgraduate courses after NEET .
At present Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi is admitting 142 PG candidates, out of which 4 seats are of MCH Pediatric Surgery and 4 seats of DM Neonatology.
Hospital
Initially there were only y 80 beds for the departments of Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology,but now Lady Hardinge Medical College have bed strength of more than 875 beds in Smt. S.K. Hospital and 3775 beds in Kalawati Saran Children Hospital.
A separate OPD was also started in 1958 to cater to the needs large population of Delhi -NCR.
Kalawati Saran Children Hospital was established on 17th March 1956 .
Center of excellence
It was started as a center of excellence in pediatric care and research. At the outset it had only 50 beds, gradually by 1994 the bed strength was increased to 350 and presently there are 377 beds in Kalawati Saran Children Hospital. It has the largest Neonatal wing in Delhi with 84 beds.
The opening of Indo-Japan new block has augmented various medical facilities for the patients.
Training school for nurses started modestly in 1916 with 11 probationers admitted to the school every year. The school was further expanded to admit 50 students. The School was upgraded to Nursing College of Nursing 2007.

Duration of Internship is 12 one year after completing above Professional examination. During this period, they also spend 2 months in the rural health centers for field work. The Stipend during the period of Internship would be as per Govt. of India guidelines from time to time.
Guidelines for admission to Postgraduate (M.D/M.S)
No separate all India Entrance Exam is held for admission to super speciality MCH (Paediatric Surgery) DM (Neonatology) Courses, Admission is conducted by Delhi University through their Entrance Examination 50% All India quota seats , proportionately SC/ST/OBC seats are filled by Director General of Health Services on the basis of merit in the All India Postgraduate Medical Entrance Examination conducted by All India Institute of Medical Sciences in the month of January notified in September of the previous year. |
Reservation
50% Delhi University quota seats and proportionately SC/ST/OBC quota seats are filled by Delhi University through Delhi University’s Post-graduate Medical Entrance Examination. Postgraduate Degree / super specialty Courses.
