As per latest information from official website of NMC ,  there are 824 medical colleges with 129805 MBBS seats in India . Out is these 824 medical colleges there are 454 Govt. / Govt Society and remaining 370 are private /deemed medical colleges. There are 63657 MBBS seats in Govt colleges including AIIMS , BHU , JIPMER and 66148 MBBS seats in private /deemed colleges throughout India. If we compare with last year data this year there will be 15000 more MBBS seats at the time of counselling.

NEET UG 2026 exam Schedule by NTA

As per notification NEET UG 2026 will be conducted on May 3 , 2025 (Sunday) and result will be declared by June 14 , 2026 after that state has released merit list for MBBS BDS and other profession courses admission . In Govt. medical colleges  15% of total seats are reserved for All India Quota  and counselling for these seats are conducted by Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).  For the remaining 85 % seats of Govt. colleges and 100% seats of private medical colleges(if any) counselling will be conducted by state authority.

MBBS Admission Process in Private & Deemed Medical Colleges

Below is an overview of the admission process::

Step 1: Appear for NEET UG Entrance Exam

The first and foremost requirement for MBBS admission is appearing for the NEET UG exam. The National Testing Agency (NTA) will conducts the NEET UG entrance exam.

Step 2: Choose the College

After the NEET UG exam result is declared, if a medical aspirants finds that he/she is not getting Govt or Semi Govt college either through AIQ or state quota , candidate can go for private or deemed medical colleges they wish to take admission depending on their budget & reputation of the college.

Step 3: Counselling Process

There are two major counselling routes for private and deemed medical colleges:

  • All India Quota Counselling (for deemed universities): Conducted by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the All India Counseling is applicable for admissions to medical colleges that are deemed universities. The seat allotment is based on the NEET rank, and students can choose their college preferences during the counseling.

  • State Counseling (for private medical colleges): Each state conducts its own counseling for private medical colleges within the state. The process is generally overseen by the respective state government or the counseling authority. Students must register for the counseling and participate in the seat allocation process based on their NEET scores.
