Understanding the NRI Quota for MBBS Admission in India

The NRI quota allows students who are citizens of countries outside of India to apply for a limited number of MBBS seats in Indian medical colleges. Under this quota, the number of seats is fixed by each institution and usually involves a higher fee structure compared to the general category, but it offers an easier admission process.

Eligibility Criteria for NRI Quota MBBS Admission

To apply for MBBS under the NRI quota, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • NRI Status: Some students think that the candidate must be a Non-Resident Indian (NRI), which means they are living outside of India but it is not compulsory, even if you are living in India you can apply under NRI quota .
  • NEET UG Qualification:All medical aspirants including NRIs need to qualify for the NEET UG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test), which is the entrance exam for all medical admissions in India.

As per latest information from official website of NMC ,  there are 819 medical colleges with 128875 MBBS seats in India . Out is these 819 medical colleges there are 455 Govt. / Govt Society and remaining 364 are private /deemed medical colleges. There are 65193 MBBS seats in Govt colleges including AIIMS , BHU , JIPMER and 63682 MBBS seats in private /deemed colleges through out India. If we compare with last year data this year there will be 13500 more MBBS seats at the time of counselling.

NEET UG 2025 exam Schedule by NTA

Last year NEET UG 2025 was conducted on May 4 , 2025 (Sunday) and result was declared on June 14 , 2025 after that state has released merit list for MBBS BDS and other profession courses admission . In Govt. medical colleges  15% of total seats are reserved for All India Quota  and counselling for these seats are conducted by Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).  For the remaining 85 % seats of Govt. colleges and 100% seats of private medical colleges(if any) counselling will be conducted by state authority.
