MBBS BDS Admission process in India

In this article we are going to discuss the process of getting MBBS and BDS admission in any of the state Govt. medical college or dental college irrespective of the candidates domicile .

We must know that admission in govt. college is possible only through All India Quota or state Quota.

As far as AIQ is concerned there are only 15 % seats are reserved while at state level 85% seats are reserved for state domicile candidates only.

Here we will discuss about the number of seats available in Govt. colleges state wise. In addition to this we can check minimum marks required by a candidate to get a seat. Before starting our main topic we would like to share that:

As per latest information from official website of NMC ,  there are 824 medical colleges with 129805 MBBS seats in India . Out is these 824 medical colleges there are 454 Govt. / Govt Society and remaining 370 are private /deemed medical colleges. There are 63657 MBBS seats in Govt colleges including AIIMS , BHU , JIPMER and 66148 MBBS seats in private /deemed colleges throughout India. If we compare with last year data this year there will be 15000 more MBBS seats at the time of counselling.

NEET UG 2025 exam Schedule by NTA

Last year NEET UG 2025 was conducted on May 4 , 2025 (Sunday) and result was declared on June 14 , 2025 after that state has released merit list for MBBS BDS and other profession courses admission . In Govt. medical colleges  15% of total seats are reserved for All India Quota  and counselling for these seats are conducted by Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).  For the remaining 85 % seats of Govt. colleges and 100% seats of private medical colleges(if any) counselling will be conducted by state authority.

MBBS and BDS Application process is online. Candidates had to register themselves on the official website in order to fill the application. The application process for NEET UG will of  three steps.

Steps to be followed to complete NEET UG application process  .

  1. student will complete the registration by entering his /her details fill the application,
  2. upload the required documents and
  3. pay the prescribed application fee.

NEET UG eligibility criteria

NTA has prescribed the eligibility criteria for NEET UG. All those candidates who wish to apply for the common test are advised to check whether they fulfill  the criteria specified by NTA or not.

Candidates who fulfill the following parameters are eligible for NEET UG .

Nationality

If we talk about Nationality all the students those falls under below mentioned categories can apply for NEET UG

  • Indian Nationals,
  • Non-Resident Indians (NRIs)
  • Overseas Citizen of India (OCI)
  • Persons with Indian Origin (PIO)
  • Foreign Nationals

Age Limit

As far as age limit is concerned please check below given parameters

  • The minimum age of a candidate as on December 31 should be 17 years.
  • As the rule specifying the upper age limit of the candidate was challenged last year in the court of law. So, there is no upper age limit as of now and candidates older than 25 years of age applying for NEET UG 2021 will be provisionally admitted subject to the ruling of the High Court of Delhi.

Minimum qualification for NEET UG 

We must know that to apply for NEET UG

  • Candidate must have cleared Class XII or equivalent from a recognized institute.
  • students who are appearing for Class XII or equivalent in summer 2024 can also apply for NEET UG 2024.

Mandatory subjects  for NEET UG

  • Candidate must have cleared Class XII or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
  • Candidates who have passed Class XII or equivalent with Biology as an additional subject are also eligible.

Minimum marks required  for NEET UG (qualifying examination)

  • General category ==50%
  • PwD category =45%
  • SC/ST/OBC =40%

NEET UG Dress code

Some of the students does malpractices in examination as a result, National Testing Authority follows strict policies to maintain the discipline and fairness during NEET UG exam.

One of  the important policies to prevent bad practices  dress code for NEET UG is given. National Testing Authority has prescribed a dress code for the examination day along with a list of items that are barred in the examination hall. Below are a few important points about the dress code for NEET UG

  • Light clothes with half sleeves, long sleeves are not permitted.
  • Ornaments, piercings, etc. are not permitted
  • Candidates wearing a customary dress should report to the examination centre at least an hour before the last reporting time.
  • Slippers, sandals with low heels are permitted. Shoes are not permitted.

NEET UG  exam day guidelines

Exam day guidelines for NEET UG aim to help the candidates appearing for the examination have a hassle-free day and keep them stress-free and calm on the Examination Day.

Items allowed in Examination centre

  • NEET UG admit card
  • One passport size & one Postcard size photographs (preferably same as the one submitted with the application form)
  • A valid photo Id proof (Driving Licence, PAN Card, Passport/ Aadhaar card)
  • PwD Certificate (only if applicable)

Items not allowed in Examination centre

  • Stationery item like textual material (printed or written), bits of papers, Geometry/Pencil Box, Plastic Pouch, Calculator, Pen, Scale, Writing Pad, Pen Drives, Eraser, Calculator, Log Table, Electronic Pen/Scanner, etc.
  • Communication devices like Mobile Phone, Bluetooth, Earphones, Microphone, Pager, Health Band, etc.
  • Other items like Wallet, Goggles, Handbags, Belt, Cap Watch/Wrist Watch, Bracelet, Camera, etc.
  • Any eatable item opened or packed, water bottle, tea, coffee, cold drinks, etc.
  • Any other item which could be used for unfair means, by hiding communication devices like a microchip, camera, Bluetooth device, etc.
  • Candidates suffering from diabetes are allowed to carry eatables (with prior intimation) like sugar tablets/fruits (like banana/apple/orange) and transparent water bottle. However, they will not be allowed to carry packed foods like chocolate/ candy/sandwich, etc.

NEET UG Counselling

If the things  goes as per schedule NEET counselling will begin from June/July . The counselling of NEET UG will be conducted online.

Counselling for the All India Quota seats will be conducted in two rounds.

One counselling is done by  Medical Counseling Committee (MCC).

The counselling of NEET UG is conducted by the Directorate General of Health Sciences (DGHS) on behalf of the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC). It will be done on the basis of the All India Ranks (AIR) obtained by the registered candidates in NEET UG.

In this counselling there are 15% seats from all the Govt. colleges of India. And another is done by respective states.

Seats left vacant after the second round of NEET counselling  will not be transferred to the respective state quota and MCC will conduct counselling for these seats. Earlier these seats were transferred to the respective state The seats left vacant in the AIQ quota of Deemed Universities/ Central Universities/ ECIC colleges will be filled in the mop-up round of NEET UG  counselling. Remaining seats (if any) will be filled in the institutional round/ stray round of NEET counselling.
